Current challenges and advanced technologies in Biomethane production from biomass – the route towards a self-energy achievement

In the present scenario, one of the most important aspects to comply with the circular bioeconomy is the urgent need to valorization of biomethane and its role in renewable energy transitions in global energy demand. Recent studies suggest that an additional biogas upgrading technologies are needed to improve the biomethane production. Therefore, biogas upgrading to biomethane quality and biomethane production from biomass including lignocellulose materials (incl. various types of enzyme application), biomass streams from the food/meat waste processing industries have the potential to increase green-gas production with simultaneous decreasing of fossil fuel consumption. The biogas and its upgrading to biomethane need to be developed of innovative methods based on physical and chemical processes as well as, with the application of membrane and cryogenic technologies. Moreover, initial biogas pre-treatment and removal of contaminants is the first and significant step to ensure biomethane quality before its injection into the gas grid. In this context, it is mentionable that many countries have already implemented biogas upgrading to increase the share of green fuel in the country’s energy balance. With the thrust of eco-friendly resource application and effective biomethane production methods development, the expected market growth of biomethane is indeed. In this context, biogas upgrading and biomethane production through an anaerobic digestion process plays a vital role in the transition towards decarbonized societies.
